LANDSCAPE DESIGN – PORT MACQUARIE, MID-NORTH COAST, NSW

Your home, your lifestyle, your tastes – your choice of flavours.

As an experienced Landscape Designer I have learned a few things when discussing with a homeowner things to do to improve their garden and outdoor spaces:

listen, advise and don’t tell them what flavour ice cream they like.

Everyone’s taste is different.  What appeals to me may not be to the liking or taste of a client. As a designer my job is to guide not dictate. There is so much choice as to hard landscaping options, lighting and the choice of thousands of different planting schemes and plant choices.

In my initial consultation I find out about the intended use of the outdoor space, who will live in the home and point out any hard landscaping restrictions and challenges.  We discuss the orientation of the land in relation to the home (which will affect plant choice). Budget is always good to know upfront as it will influence the initial concept ideas. Then we discuss the ‘wish list’ – what would the ideal space look like when complete.

And what flavour? What type of garden?  Native garden, low-maintenance, formal Hamptons style, cactus, Mediterranean, herb, cottage… bushy plants, strappy plants, climbers, ground cover, fruit trees, ornamental plants, exotic plants, flowers (colours, smells, when in bloom), so much choice and endless possibilities. That is why a design concept is so essential. If you don’t have a plan you are planning to make costly mistakes.  A well-designed and cohesive outdoor space not only complements a home it adds considerable value, which continues to grow as the garden flourishes.

A garden and outdoor space you enjoy is like an ice cream  – every day is a Sundae.

Once I have a site plan, showing the home (or intended home, if a new build) I can start adding a ‘mud map’ of hard and soft landscaping concepts.  For my clients this is a great way for them to really get involved in their new space and enjoy the journey into creating their custom outdoor space.
